VFD suddenly trips and your production line stops?

VFD suddenly trips and your production line stops? Most factories lose hours (or days) because of the same 4-5 avoidable faults…

Here are the Top 5 Common VFD Faults we see every week + quick diagnostic & fix cheatsheet

1️⃣ Overcurrent (OC / E.oc / F.oc) Symptom: Trips right after start or during acceleration Most likely causes:

  • Motor jammed / mechanical binding
  • Output cable short or insulation damage
  • Wrong VFD sizing or bad acceleration time Quick check: Disconnect motor cables → power on VFD → still faults? → drive issue. No fault? → motor/cable problem. Megger test the motor windings!

2️⃣ Overvoltage (OV / E.ov) Symptom: Trips mostly during deceleration Root cause 99% of time: Decel time too short + large inertia load Fast fixes:

  • Increase deceleration time (parameter)
  • Add braking resistor + braking unit
  • Enable DC braking or flux braking

3️⃣ Undervoltage / Input Voltage Low (UV / LV) Symptom: Won’t start or trips randomly Causes: Weak grid, loose input terminals, blown fuse, bad phase Action: Measure all 3 input phases → should be within ±10% of rated voltage

4️⃣ Overheating (OH / E.t / TH) Symptom: VFD derates or shuts down after running for a while Common culprits:

  • Blocked cooling fan / dusty heatsink
  • High ambient temp (>40°C without derating)
  • Non-stop heavy load Fix: Clean fan + heatsink every 3–6 months (preventive maintenance game changer!)

5️⃣ Ground Fault / Earth Leakage (GF / E.GF) Symptom: Immediate trip on start Usual suspects: Damaged motor winding → ground, wet cable, insulation breakdown Diagnostic trick: Disconnect motor leads from VFD → power on → no fault = motor/cable issue

Pro tip most people miss: Always record the exact fault code + timestamp + operating condition before resetting. Modern VFDs store fault history — use it!

Which fault haunts your site the most? Drop it in the comments We help factories cut VFD downtime by 60–80% with proper diagnostics + PM plans.

DM us if your VFD is throwing mystery codes — happy to give a second opinion (no strings attached).
